Get the most out of your... arrow keys?

If we use a computer, most of us probably use our arrow keys every day. I know I do. Here are some awesome shortcuts involving arrow keys. (+ a few bonuses!)

Also note, these can be combined with mouse selection on websites, etc. They are not just for editing text.

Jump straight to the shortcuts for Mac or Windows

Mac

Cursor Placement

Place your cursor right where you want to be.

option + = move to the end of the next word

option + = move to the beginning of the previous word

command + = move to end of line

command + = move to beginning of line

Text Selection

Select exactly what you want with deadly accuracy.

shift + = select next character

shift + = select previous character

shift + = select from current position to current position on previous line

shift + = select from current position to current position on next line

option + shift + = select next word

option + shift + = select previous word

option + shift + = select to end of paragraph

option + shift + = select to beginning of paragraph

command + shift + = select to end of line

command + shift + = select to beginning of line

command + shift + = select to end of document

command + shift + = select to beginning of document

Bonus: Text Deletion

so… these don’t use arrows keys, but they are super useful!

option + delete = delete previous word

option + fn + delete = delete next word

command + delete = delete to beginning of line

Windows

Ctrl + = move to the beginning of the next word

Ctrl + = move to the beginning of the previous word

Text Selection

Select *exactly* the text you want.

Shift + = select next character

Shift + = select previous character

Shift + = select from current position to current position on previous line

Shift + = select from current position to current position on next line

Ctrl + Shift + = select next word

Ctrl + Shift + = select previous word

Bonus *look mom, no arrow keys!*

Shift + End = select to end of line

Shift + Home = select to beginning of line

Home then Shift + End = select whole line

Bonus: Text Deletion

Ctrl + Backspace = delete previous word

Ctrl + Delete = delete next word

Window Placement

*Snap*, *snap*, *snap* those windows to where you want them.

Windows + = snap window to right half of screen

Windows + = snap window to left half of screen

Windows + = Make window full screen, or (Windows 10 only), if window is snap to side of screen, move window top quarter of screen

Windows + = Minimize window, or (Windows 10 only), if window is snap to side of screen, move window bottom quarter of screen
