My Favorite Chrome Tricks

Dragging from the Download Bar

Did you know you can drag items from the Download Bar as if dragging the item from Finder or File Explorer? You can! Save yourself a few clicks and try it out!

Search Google using right click

If you select some text you can right click on it and select Search Google for "Selected Text" and you'll be taken straight to a Google results page for the selected text.

You can also use this to navigate to link text that isn't active. Select the link text, right click it, and select the Go to http://example.com option.

Chrome's reader mode

Chrome's reader mode is disabled by default, but can be enabled in the chrome://flags page. It makes pages easier to read by made text and images a consistent size and by hiding ads and other distracting content on the page.

Picture in picture and media controls

Chrome has added some great media controls recently. Next time audio or video is playing, select media button that appears next to the Chrome accounts icon and try these convenient controls out!

Turning Websites into Web Apps

Chrome has a great feature that makes it easy to turn any website into a web app that feels much more like a native application. Select the vertical ellipsis button > More Tools > Create Shortcut... option, then name the app and make sure to check the Open as window option. Finally click the Create button and enjoy your new Web App!

Tab Groups

You can work multiple tabs in Chrome by selecting a tab, then holding command (on mac) or control (on windows) and then selecting additional tabs. You can select a range of tabs by holding shift instead of command or control. Selected tabs can then be closed used shortcuts or the right click window, or dragged into a new window or into a different window.

Chrome's task manager

Chrome has a task manager that can be found under the vertical ellipsis button > More Tools > Task Manager. It's useful for what specifically is slowing Chrome down. On Windows, the shortcut to launch it is shift + escape.

By default, there is no shortcut to launch the Chrome Task Manager on Mac, but you can create your own shortcut for it (or any other applications menu options) by following this video.

Recover recently closed tabs

You can recover the last closed tab or window using the shortcut command+shift+t on Mac or control + shift + t on Windows. You can press it repeatedly to recover more tabs.

Accounts

Using the accounts feature of your browser is powerful. You can create different profiles that are dedicated to specific contexts such as personal, work, school, or play. This lets you customize the theme, extensions, bookmarks, and browser settings for each of these contexts. It also lets you stay logged into a site with multiple accounts when the site only supports one account at a time like Microsoft Office.
